Combined Cello Strings

As cello players we know that we don’t always buy the whole set to use on our cello. In fact, it is rare that any professional cellist (soloist, orchestra or teacher) actually use a complete branded set.  If you like to combine different strings on your cello, here is the easiest way to order them…and with the cheapest combination prices in the world with free, First Class Mail shipping.  We also offer free International shipping with minimum orders of $300 (International First Class Mail).  International customers (outside of USA) if your order is below $300, you can still order from us, but must pay for your desired method of shipping here.

Most professional cellists prefer combining two manufacturers and even sometimes three.  While some makers are known for having the best C and G strings, like Thomastik Spirocore, Larsen Magnacore or now more recently Thomastik’s Versum and Pirastro’s Perpetual strings, one can easily find a winning combination where they choose their favorite C and G strings, then find an equally complementary A and D that works on that particular cello.  Everyone has a price in mind and a budget, so we try our best to offer something for everyone here.

Higher end, very exclusive sets that are most popular:

Spirocore Tungsten C and G, with anything on top: Magnacore, Larsen, Evah Pirazzi or Jargar.  Mostly, we choose and combine strings in pairs here and for good reason: Same C/G and same brand A/D. There is more of a likelihood when mixing the A and D strings with different brands, that players will notice more of a differing response or tone character from one string to the other. This is why (mostly) you will see the same brand A and D paired together.

For those on a budget and just cannot buy the $250 set of cello strings, we combine some very productive and professional quality strings for you:  A great set of strings that are both affordable and work very well together:  Try the set of Chrome Spirocore C & G, with Larsen or Jargar A and D.  Another good set will be the Helicore C & G with the same Larsen or Jargar strings.

There is always something (the weakest link?) on a cello may not be as responsive or does not match well.  The most common two complaints for cellists:  Their A string is “too bright”, compared to the rest of the set, or the A string is too ‘hard’ or tight feeling or sounding:  The warmest and most responsive A string that we recommend: Passione A string (see below).   Also, the other most common complaint, is that the C string is weak, or does not have enough power.  Sometimes you can get loud C strings, but the string isn’t responsive enough.  Our recommendation is to always try to find some kind of Tungsten made C string: Thomastik Tungsten C, Larsen Magnacore, Versum (A warm Spirocore!) and recently Pirastro’s Perpetual.  Surely some other tungsten C’s might work, but getting one of the above Tungsten C’s are a sure bet in most cases.  While these C’s may seem expensive, they work and are worth spending the extra money if your low end isn’t working like you would like it to.
